POLICY BRIEF, AUGUST 2022

On 1 August 2022, Cabinet approved the principles for
the amendment of the Animal Diseases Act Cap 38,
1964 as amended in 2000 and authorized the Minister of
Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries (MAAIF) to draft
the Bill. The National One Health Platform (NOHP) urges
MAAIF and other actors to expedite the implementation of
this game-changing decision of Cabinet, and to ensure that
the approved principles for amendment of the current law
are used to strengthen the legal framework for the control
and prevention of animal diseases, while addressing the
immediate and long-term safety of human food of animal
origin, which is under threat from the growing problem of
antimicrobial resistance (AMR).
