Implications of the Current Medicines Stock-Outs Crisis
Essential medicines and health supplies (EMHS) form one of the six building blocks of the health system and determine its functionality. They improve health and save lives when they are available, affordable, of assured quality, and properly used. In Uganda’s case, they are one of the first considerations in seeking healthcare is the biggest item in household out-of-pocket health expenditures, and accounts for the second largest expense in the public health budget, after human resources.
Yet, according to World Health Organization (WHO), lack of access to essential medicines remains one of the most serious global public health problems.
