In response to evolving funding landscapes and the increasing need for financial independence, HEPS-Uganda has taken a bold step forward. On June 27, 2025, the organization hosted a transformative Social Entrepreneurship Master Class designed to equip its Board and staff with the tools to build long-term financial sustainability through innovative resource mobilization strategies.
Founded in November 2000, HEPS-Uganda is a membership-based NGO working to promote health and socioeconomic rights for vulnerable populations across Uganda. Through research, advocacy, collaborations, and capacity building, HEPS champions access to health and social resources.
The financial landscape for NGOs in Uganda is shifting. According to recent statistics, over 67% of the 14,000+ registered NGOs in Uganda faced closure by 2024 due to reduced funding and regulatory challenges. For HEPS-Uganda, this reality underscores the need for self-reliance and financial resilience.
Social entrepreneurship has emerged as a viable and innovative path toward sustainability, one that aligns closely with HEPS-Uganda’s mission and community impact goals.
In partnership with Capital Solutions Limited, HEPS-Uganda organized a one-day training session at Fairway Hotel in Kampala. The training brought together Board members and staff, for a dynamic learning experience.
Key training topics included:
- Fundamentals of social entrepreneurship
- Hybrid business models for NGOs
- Revenue diversification and risk mitigation
- Strategic planning for financial resilience
The overall goal of the training was to shift mindsets and provide practical strategies for turning mission-aligned ideas into sustainable income-generating ventures.
The session concluded with the development of a comprehensive 12-month action plan, providing a roadmap for HEPS-Uganda’s venture into social entrepreneurship.
Over 95% of participants reported that the training fulfilled their learning goals. Board members and staff praised the interactive format, expert facilitation, and the opportunity to collaborate on future-oriented ideas.
“The training was eye-opening. It has helped us reimagine sustainability not as a challenge, but as an opportunity to innovate,” remarked the Chairman, Board of Governors_ Mr. Kenneth Nyehoora Mugumya.

CONCLUSION: A STRATEGIC SHIFT TOWARD SUSTAINABILITY
HEPS-Uganda is setting a powerful example for NGOs across the region. By investing in knowledge, building internal capacity, and embracing entrepreneurial thinking, the organization is securing its future while staying true to its mission of promoting health and socioeconomic justice for all.
