The Coalition for Health Promotion and Social Development (HEPS-Uganda) with support from the Open Society Initiative for Eastern Africa (OSIEA) is implementing a project aimed at strengthening the private pharmaceutical sector accountability in Uganda. The project contributes to improved governance and accountability within the private pharmaceutical sector. The project will cause change in policies and improved regulation to carter for the private sector. The project will create linkages with other players including partners in trade policy (SEATINI), public interest litigation (CEHURD) and access to information (AFIC).

To ensure that the private sector is accountable, the project is generating evidence to inform advocacy; the project team is investigating practices in the private pharmaceutical sector that are detrimental to public health. These include exorbitant prices of medicines, harmful practices in procurement, inefficiencies in supply management of medicines which may expose families to risk of catastrophic expenditures and death.

Specific objectives

  •           Investigate and expose covert harmful practices of private pharmaceutical sector in Uganda.
  •           Improve regulation of private pharmaceutical sector in Uganda.

Scope: National Level
